Whichever way this year's Euroleague shining played out, history could be made with Olympiacos going after a repeat championship and additionally Real Madrid its to begin with in 18 years. And as it turns out, fate's scribe was authoring with Red(s) pen: Just as before, tournament underdogs Olympiacos appeared EL alpha dogs with a 100-88 win over Actual Madrid for only the third repeat title of one more 25 years.
Real Madrid jumped out to the early lead as All-Euroleague initial teamer Rudy Fernandez accounted for six points and two assists on their team's first 10 ideas, finding Sergio Llull many times; the two would combine for 16 inside the first quarter alone. Los Blancos' 27-10 lead following your opening stanza might have been considered enough against an everyday team – but Europe's return kids are hardly ordinary.
Pero Antic's three to start the scoring in the 2nd quarter got the Olympiacos fans oh no- their feet –more important triggering a 13-2 operated with contributions from Kyle Hines and Kostas Sloukas to bring the Reds to within seven at 29-22. Along with highlight-reel Reyes-to-Slaughter alley-oop dunk out, the Reds fairly well owned cost-free 10 minutes, outscoring Actual 27-14
Of particular note with the second 10 minutes had been Stratos Perperglou stifling Fernandez, confining him to just several points on free throws; in fact, Perperglou's resistive play was representative associated with Olympiacos', as nearly 50 % of the Madrid points (six) in the quarter were made in the line, while six Realistic turnovers were forced.
Vassilis Spanoulis, remarkably quiet for way too long, finally broke his personal cold streak which has a three after the first minute within the third quarter and some sort of subsequent three would supply Olympiacos its first head at 48-45 – must've been something concocted at halftime … another run – this one 15-5 – appeared to own Real on the ropes in the third, but Los Blancos weren't complete yet, momentarily retaking the steer at 56-55 after a couple jumpers from Fernandez.
Among the highlights in a pressure-packed final five minutes for the third were two consecutive quits of Fernandez after he'd run up seven with the stanza already; among the lowlights, Sloukas assessed in a technical after flopping. Nikola Mirotic, uncharacteristically plagued with break down trouble earned his fourth PF – one of 10 committed by three members within the Real frontcourt – late inside third quarter as perfectly. After 30 minutes, that it was a new ballgame: 61-61.
By using 90 seconds gone, Spanoulis reentered the court to palpable worry. A section of Reds fanatics maintained their trademark tone, but many were strangely silent although the Madridistas clung to edges within their seats. The death blow sometimes have come on a disguised . play, as Acie Law required Llull to bounce a good dribble off his foot and on the backcourt – Spanoulis' followup a few would ultimately seal the deal from 70-62:
While Law and Sloukas and Georgi Shermadini happened to score from various spots on the ground, Jaycee Carroll's three-pointer – one amongst three Madrid shooting attempts within the fourth quarter's first all five minutes – stood alone as a Real success from a floor. By that time, the Reds' lead possessed ballooned to 82-70 and also the Spanish side simply do not have an Olympiacos-like wonder comeback in 'em.
