MLS A La club is rating often and winning. It wasnat way back when Chivas USA was the laughingstock of the category. The Los Angeles baseball club had suffered its third straight time with single-digit advantages. Freshly hired instructor Jose Luis Sanchez Solaas remarks about the clubas concentrate on Mexican-American players and a shift in Chivasa enjoying design drew scoffs from pundits and fans. When Chivas concerns Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, the Goats (3-2-1) is going to be sitting in second position in the Western Conference, off to 1 of the best starts in business history. "Iam a little bit surprised," RSL coach Jason Kreis said this week. "Itas a brand new group with a brand new instructor. If you just count the amount of players in their starting group which were inside their starting group last year, itas suprisingly low. What they have done is theyave ordered to their coachas program and they work impossible. They need it in the worst way. "My feeling is, in this league, the group that wants it in the worst way oftentimes gets it. ... I preach that to my staff as well." Sanchez Sola, nicknamed "El Chelis," promised a change to an even more high-powered, Latin-style of play. "We are going to attempt to implement an even more interesting type of soccer for our supporters, without forgetting that we're a team that performs in the United States," he explained at the time. "We will look to interest both countries while obtaining positive results for the team. I feel that Chivas USA, at some time, lost that flavor and approach with the ball that's emphasized in Mexico and Latin America; we must re-establish that part and combine it with the MLSa design of play." Up to now, Chivasa play has been effective, if not particularly beautiful. The teamas 10 objectives through six games would be the second most in Major League Soccer. But the club has been content to play on protection, leaving goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to help keep Chivas in a few games. "Heas got a very, very new group," said national basketball analyst Brian Dunseth, who was briefly an integral part of Chivas after being dealt from Real Salt Lake. "There arenat a lot of players a lot of other teams will want or have required. And somehow heas identified a way to be fairly competitive." History continues below Sanchez Sola, the former head of Puebla in Mexicoas Liga MX, has rankled plenty with his outspokenness and roster moves. But up to now, Chivasa roster movements have did actually work. "The staff was needing a radical overhaul," Dunseth said. "Talking with [players], it sounds as if this group is having plenty of fun. Chelis is just a spark. Heas a character, and... heas got them believing." afalk@sltrib.com Copyright 2013 The Salt Lake Tribune. All rights reserved.
