Manchester United came back from a goal down to beat Southampton 2-1 at Old Trafford to go seven points clear at the top of the Premier League. The team performance as a whole was less than convincing, but goalkeeper David de Gea will be especially relieved Man Utd left with all three points.
De Gea has saved The Red Devils on a number of occasions, but he played a big part in The Saints' opener just three minutes into the game. After a weak back pass from Michael Carrick, de Gea sprinted out of his goal only to fail in challenging for the ball. This gave Jay Rodriguez the chance to knock the ball past the Spanish 'keeper and into the goal.
De Gea's is not alone on a long list of Man Utd goalkeepers who have made major errors, some which have cost The Red Devils dearly.
He has made quite a few errors during his time at Old Trafford, as well as some incredible saves. He is one of the most criticised 'keepers in the Premier League, sometimes wrongly so, but there was no doubt who was at fault in this one.
Michael Carrick's back pass was under-hit putting the Spanish 'keeper in danger, but when he came off his line it looked like he would make the challenge and prevent the goal. Instead for some strange reason he jumped slightly off the ground giving Jay Rodriquez the chance to roll the ball under his feet for the opener.
Disappointing to say the least for such a talented goalkeeper and Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping there are not many more those mistakes this season.
Undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the world at one point and a key to the success of France on the international stage, but his time at Manchester United was marred by some serious errors on his part.
One of those mistakes came in the F.A. Cup against West Ham United at Old Trafford. As Paolo Di Canio timed his run to perfection to be played through on goal, Barthez threw his arm in the air convinced a flag would be raised if he persisted.
Unfortunately for Man Utd and the French goalkeeper, the linesman never raised his flag. By the time Barthez came to terms with the fact the offside would not be given, it was too late.
It turned out to be the winner and Manchester United were knocked out of the F.A. cup by huge underdogs West Ham United in the Theatre of Dreams.
After an attack from Man Utd, Ipswich went on a counter attack with a long ball through to Ipswich Town forward Chris Kiwomya. Peter Schmeichel looked to have it covered as he stormed out of his goal, but completely missed the ball as he slid in to clear. The ball went over his leg, through to Kiwomya, who rolled it into the empty net.
Manchester united had won the title three years in a row but in the 2001/2002 season Arsenal were hellbent on preventing them winning a fourth.
The game at Highbury in November of 2001 was a pinnacle game in the season as the Gooners were looking to gain ground on league leaders Liverpool and Manchester United wanted to kick-start a recovery from their poor start to season which had left the Red Devils in sixth place.
At 1-1 Man Utd was in with a shout of maybe stealing a win, though a draw would be a decent result at Highbury. Fabien Barthez, however, made two huge mistakes to gift the Gooners two goals and a 3-1 win.
The first was a goal-kick which went haywire as Barthez passed the ball to Arsenal striker Thierry Henry. The clinical Frenchman accepted the gift and passed it into the net to send the Gooners on their way to a vital three points.
As if matters could not get any worse for Barthez, he failed to deal with a through ball and the stampeding Henry, who was smelling blood. The ball seemed to go through Barthez's arms and once again Henry punished the Red Devils to seal the victory.
The runner-up is this ultimate let off against Tottenham Hotspur. The former Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Roy Carroll was between the sticks during a bumpy time in Manchester United's goalkeeper history, and this howler goes a long way to explaining why he did not make the cut.
With the game at 0-0 and both teams pushing for the winner late on, a poor headed clearance from Mikaël Silvestre was volleyed by Pedro Mendes from near the halfway line. Carroll managed to get in a good position to catch the ball, but fumbled it and the ball bounced across the line.
To the amazement of Tottenham, everyone watching and even Roy Carroll, the linesman failed to see the ball cross the line and did not award the goal.
Manchester United almost went on to win the game late on, which would have added insult to injury, but the game finished 0-0.
Massimo Taibi was an attempt by Sir Alex Ferguson to replace goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel, but Fergie found out pretty soon he was not going to be a successor to the throne.
In September of the 1999/2000, the season after Manchester United's historic treble winning campaign, the Red Devils were expected to beat Southampton at home. The Saints, however, turned up to take all three points from Old Trafford, where the two teams played out a six goal thriller.This goal came when Manchester United had once again come back from a goal down to be leading 2-1. The Red Devils had their chances to extend their lead as well before Southampton broke toward the Man Utd goal.
Saints legend Matt Le Tissier was given the ball, but he could only produce a weak effort from 25 yards out. As the ball rolled toward the Italian 'keeper everything seemed under control, but despite seemingly covering the ball to gather it in his arms, the ball rolled through his legs and across the line.
Taibi, like everyone else, was baffled at the incident and looked to his boots and the ground to try and come up with an explanation. But still to this day, there is no explanation other than his own pitfalls as a goalkeeper.
