City's Joleon Lescott is likely to partner Manchester United's Chris Smalling at centre back after being called up last minute when a number of injuries left The Three Lions' defence depleted.
"Roy Hodgson has insisted that England's injury-blighted defence is capable of containing the threat of Montenegro strike duo Mirko Vucinic and Stefan Jovetic," reports Joe Fish of sportsmole.co.uk.
"Lescott was initially omitted from the squad, while Smalling only has five international caps, but Hodgson has reiterated his faith in England's stand-in defensive lineup."
Hodgson said: "I just remind people that Joleon Lescott helped Manchester City to their first title in 40-odd years, and in Chris Smalling we have someone who's playing regularly for the champions-elect.
"It's not as if we've been forced to pick people who don't play at the highest level and I personally trust the pair of them."
Meanwhile, Everton legend Graham Stuart says Everton should look to bring Lescott back to the blue side of Liverpool this summer.
"Lescott, who David Moyes originally signed from Wolves for around £4.5m in 2006, has fallen out of favour at the Etihad stadium, and is rumoured to be available again for a similar fee at the end of the current season," reports the Liverpool Echo's Greg O'Keeffe.
"And former Toffees hero Stuart, who won an FA Cup Winner's medal with the Blues in 1995, reckons the chance for Moyes to bolster his defensive ranks by re-signing the 25-cap England man again may be too good to resist."
Elsewhere this morning, City captain Vincent Kompany has warned neighbours Manchester United that the Blues will be back.
"The City skipper will turn out for the other Red Devils – the Belgian national team – against Macedonia in a World Cup qualifier, his first taste of football in over two months," claims Stuart Brennan of the Manchester Evening News.
"And he has vowed that the Blues will learn from the mistakes which have allowed leaders United to open up an insurmountable 15-point gap at the top of the Premier League.
