Paul Scholes set to return for Manchester United's away Premier League match ... - Telegraph.co.uk

The 38-year-old midfielder, who has yet to decide on his future beyond the end of this season, has trained for the past 10 days at United's Carrington training ground after being sidelined since January with a persistent knee problem.

With the former England player's recovery taking longer than initially expected, Ferguson was moved to insist last month that Scholes would not be ruled out for the rest of the campaign by the injury. The United manager has made it clear that Scholes will play a part in the final weeks of the season and he is expected to play against Sunderland to enable Ferguson to rotate his squad before the Chelsea game.

Ferguson is once again prepared to wait until the end of the campaign before discussing Scholes's future, but the player's mind is likely to be made up by the level of his involvement in the first team during the final two months of the season.

Meanwhile, United winger Antonio Valencia has admitted to being disappointed by his performances this season. The Ecuadorean has struggled to rediscover the form he displayed last year and he claims he has been hampered by previous injuries.

"It has not been quite the season I would have hoped for on a personal front," Valencia said. "I think the injuries I've had have held me back a bit. I still get the odd twinge from the last injury I had to my leg and that has perhaps affected my progress slightly."
